Diagnostic Result
Start the test and interact with your laptop touchpad. Detected input activity will appear here.
How to Test a Laptop Touchpad
A touchpad diagnostic test checks whether your laptop touchpad is sending detectable movement, click, scroll, and touch input to the browser. Start the test above, use your touchpad inside the testing area, and review the detected activity.
- Click Start Diagnostic Test.
- Move your finger across the laptop touchpad.
- Try a left click and right click if your touchpad supports them.
- Scroll vertically or horizontally.
- Try supported touch or multi-touch actions.
- Review the diagnostic results.
What Does the Touchpad Diagnostic Test Check?
This tool is designed to help you determine whether common touchpad interactions are being detected correctly.
- Touchpad movement: detects pointer movement generated by the touchpad.
- Left click: records primary button input.
- Right click: records secondary button input where supported.
- Scrolling: detects scroll activity.
- Touch input: detects supported touch events.
- Multi-touch: records multiple touch points when the browser exposes them.
Common Laptop Touchpad Problems
If your touchpad is not responding correctly, identify the exact symptom first. Different touchpad problems can have different causes, so testing movement, clicking, and scrolling separately is more useful than simply checking whether the cursor moves.
Touchpad Not Working
If there is no pointer movement or clicking, check whether the touchpad has been disabled using your laptop’s function key, physical touchpad switch, or operating-system settings. Restarting the laptop and checking the touchpad driver can also help.
Touchpad Cursor Jumping
A jumping cursor may be related to accidental palm contact, sensitivity settings, driver problems, input conflicts, or hardware issues. Test movement separately and disconnect unnecessary external pointing devices.
Touchpad Scrolling Not Working
If pointer movement works but scrolling does not, investigate touchpad gesture settings and the installed touchpad driver. Browser scrolling detection can also help determine whether scroll input is reaching the page.
Touchpad Clicking Not Working
If movement is working but clicks are not detected, test the primary and secondary click functions separately. This helps narrow the problem down to click input, configuration, or the physical click mechanism.
Touchpad Too Sensitive
Excessive sensitivity can make the pointer move when your palm or another finger accidentally touches the touchpad. Check the operating-system touchpad sensitivity settings and palm-rejection options.
More Mouse & Input Diagnostic Tools
If you are troubleshooting a laptop input problem, testing your external mouse can help determine whether the issue is specific to the touchpad or affects pointing devices more generally.
Touchpad Troubleshooting Checklist
If the diagnostic test does not detect the expected input, work through these checks before assuming the touchpad hardware has failed.
- Restart your laptop.
- Check whether the touchpad is disabled.
- Check the laptop’s touchpad settings.
- Clean the touchpad surface.
- Disconnect unnecessary external pointing devices.
- Check for touchpad driver updates.
- Restart after installing driver or system updates.
- Test movement, clicking, and scrolling separately.
- If possible, compare the behavior with an external mouse.
How to Interpret Your Touchpad Test Results
Movement Is Detected
If movement events are detected, the touchpad is sending pointer movement to the browser. If the cursor still behaves abnormally, investigate sensitivity, drivers, palm rejection, or intermittent hardware behavior.
Clicks Are Detected
If clicks are detected but movement is unreliable, the problem may be specific to tracking rather than the complete touchpad input system.
Scrolling Is Detected
If scrolling is detected, scroll input is reaching the browser. If scrolling fails elsewhere, check operating-system gesture settings and application-specific behavior.
Nothing Is Detected
If the test does not detect any activity, first check whether the touchpad is enabled and whether the laptop is correctly recognizing the input device. Driver, system settings, hardware, or browser limitations may also affect detection.
