How to Use the Mouse Latency Test

Step 1: Start the test

Step 2: Move your mouse normally

Move the mouse slowly and quickly across the testing area. Try several directions rather than performing only one movement.

Step 3: Generate enough samples

Continue moving the pointer until the sample count increases. More samples make the results more useful for spotting unusually large timing gaps.

Step 4: Review the results

Compare the average, fastest and slowest observed event intervals. A large difference between normal intervals and occasional slow intervals may indicate inconsistent event delivery rather than a simple constant delay.

Step 5: Repeat after changing one setting

If you are troubleshooting mouse lag, change only one variable at a time. For example, test one USB port, then another, or compare different polling rate settings. This makes the comparison more meaningful.

What Does a High Mouse Latency Result Mean?

A high or inconsistent browser-observed interval does not automatically mean that your mouse hardware is defective. Browser scheduling, system workload and other software can influence when JavaScript receives and processes pointer events.

If the mouse feels responsive during normal use but this test shows occasional larger intervals, repeat the test under lighter system load before replacing your mouse.
